Land & Underground

Getting around is an exploration and relatively easy!

A network of all-weather highways and roads links all parts of Thailand, facilitating efficient land transport mostly on single carriageway roads, with dual carriageways along major routes.

With traffic between provinces increasing, the government approved the Inter-City Motorway master plan in 1997 that will see construction of 13 motorway networks covering 4,150 kms over 20 years. Because of the 1997 financial crisis and other delays only 3 motorway projects totaling 168.5 kms. have been completed: Motorway 7 – the Bangkok-Chonburi Motorway covering 82 kms, Motorway 9 - Eastern Bangkok Ring Road of 64 kms, and the Southern Outer Bangkok Ring Road of 22.5 kms.

Thailand is a signatory of the Asian Highway Agreement, under which there will be 55 routes through 32 member countries linking Asia with Europe. Within Thailand, the Asian Highway consists of 9 routes covering a total length of 5,100 kms, criss-crossing the country and linking with routes in neighboring countries.

BTS Sky Train
The modern electrified trains transport Bangkok's commuters in wide air-conditioned cars, saving the time with quick, reliable service. It connects to many transportation types i.e.boat, MRT, bus terminals and soon Airport Link and Bus Rapid Transit. Each train can carry over 1,000 passengers while a similar number of people would use 800 cars, making the BTS Skytrain the most environmentally friendly mass transit system in Thailand. Currently there are two routes, the Sukhumvit Line and the Silom Line. They cover much of the central city and its many commercial, residential and tourist areas, with extensions planned to outlying areas. The trains run daily between 6:00 am and 12:00 midnight with frequent service throughout the day, increased during rush hours. The fare is based on the distance traveled.

Bangkok Metro (MRT)
MRT is the first railway system in Thailand that kept on underground level. Air conditions were designed in all 18 Stations and Close Circuit Televition Cameras (CCTV) are provided at strategic location to monitor the security of passengers. Lifts and escalators are provided. Extensions are planned but not yet constructed.
