General Travel Information I Culture & Region
Thailand’s official language is Thai - a tonal language with a unique non-Roman alphabet derived from ancient Khmer script. English is widely spoken in major cities, also appearing on signages, but it is helpful to learn a few basic Thai phrases or pleasantries when visiting more remote locations.
There is no official religion in Thailand, but nearly 95% of its people identify as Buddhist or with Theravada traditions. There are also significant Muslim communities, especially in the south, and pockets of animism in the mountain tribes to the north, and Christian communities in the large cities.
Thai culture is expressed differently in each region, and native celebrations mark each area’s unique pursuit and priorities in vibrant and distinctive ways.
